Website Support

Website Support

In September of 2017 I received an email from Matt Grace of Grace Engineering, a consumer products company in the hunting industry. The company was looking for someone to support their 3 WordPress websites, g5prime.com, g5outdoors.com and questbowhunting.com.

In addition to standard content and system updates, I’ve assisted with several projects including:

Quest Sales Force
A rewards system for Dealers selling the popular Quest Bows. Developing this system included research, installation and customization of several plugins (BuddyPress, myCRED, Remove Dashboard Access and rtMedia)

Store Locator Plus
Identified and installed the Power addon as the preferred method of updating dealer locator systems for all 3 sites

SCAM Alert!

SCAM Alert!

1. THE SEARCH

I recently search for a software package and found it advertised in the Google Sponsored Shopping results.

2. THE AD

The domain and company name is similar to a popular company, whose software the advertiser is selling.

3. LOOKS LEGIT

The site displays Verified Reviews claiming over 200 positive reviews.

4. WAIT, WHAT?

However, when you click the Verified Reviews logo it is linked to a totally different product review for another company.

5. THE REVEAL

Only if you click the product’s Reviews tab will you see several authentic reviews identifying the seller as fraudulent.

The Importance of Giving Back

The Importance of Giving Back

As a successful entrepreneur I am very mindful of the people in my life who provided training, support and opportunities for my growth. It is my firm belief that all of us who have benefited from the kindness of others have the privilege and obligation to pass on our good fortune to others.

That’s why I make it a point to work with non profits on a deeply reduced or pro bono rate. I am blessed to have the ability to support Cancer Awareness Resource Network, My Life Our Journey Foundation, Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, and Source of Universal Love by providing website design and hosting services.

The Engineering Society of Detroit (ESD) and its Affiliate Council come together each year to honor and recognize its leaders – engineers, scientists and technical professionals who have distinguished themselves through outstanding achievement and service within their respective Societies.

The International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE), an affiliate society of ESD, presented me with this lovely plaque.

It was truly a humbling experience to stand on the same stage as leading engineers, scientists and technical professionals who have distinguished themselves through outstanding achievement and service.

This award means a great deal to me because it represents my commitment to giving back.

Domain Slamming

Domain Slamming

Don’t be a victim of Domain Slamming!

This week I received a Domain Name Expiration Notice warning me that I will lose exclusive rights to my online identity if I don’t renew ontimewebdevelopment.com right away.

The only problem is, I didn’t register ontimewebdevelopment.com with this company – my domains are all registered through SiteGround.

Domain slamming, or domain name slamming, which is similar to telephone slamming scams, refers to the practice of sending fake renewal notices or bills to domain name registrants that are actually disguised service transfer notices.

Responding to a fake renewal notice often results in a higher fee for the registrant’s domain name and an unauthorized transfer to a different registrar or service provider.

Many website owners don’t know where their domains are registered though, and it would be easy for them to fall for this ruse.  If I’d responded to the notice I’d be paying 3 times what I currently pay for this service.

Are you, like me, angered by con artists trying to steal your identity, your time and your money? Are you frustrated by the never-ending flood of Spam and Scams, Phishing, and Fraud on the Internet?

That’s why I include domain management services as part of building your online presence.  You shouldn’t have to worry about your domains expiring, or being overcharged by unscrupulous scammers.

Blacklisted!

Blacklisted!

I was recently notified that one of my newly launched websites was blacklisted by Norton – which means visitors who use Norton’s service were presented with a large ‘Malicious Website Blocked’ banner.  As you can imagine, my client was quite upset.

My first action was to check the reports from 2 security plugins used on all the sites I develop.  The site was identified as clean by both services.

Next I visited Norton’s website, where I learned that Norton’s automated scanner had marked the site unsafe due to “Annoyance factors”, a vague category defined as “Items that don’t necessarily do harm, but are a nuisance”.

My client and I were not notified of this.  We had to learn about it from a friend who visited the site. In order to unblock the site I had to create an account at Norton, verify site ownership, and request a re-evaluation. The site was marked clean within a few hours. Since then I have added all my websites to that Norton account so I will be alerted immediately if there is a change in their status.

If you know anyone panicked by the thought of their website being identified as UNSAFE, I would be happy to look into their issue and insure their reputation isn’t ruined by “Annoyance Factors”
